There are a lot of varying opinions about timeshare ownership. Some experts will say that it is never smart to own a timeshare yet other people believe the opportunity to stay at expensive resorts at affordable prices is a great investment. These views represent two extremes and the truth is really somewhere in the middle.
First of all, a timeshare should not be regarded as an investment, particularly if you're buying your unit from a resort. As soon as you take possession of your unit it will be worth less than you paid for it if you are purchasing it at full price from a vacation resort. If you think that you can buy a unit and then sell it for a higher price at a later date you are mistaken. If the word "investment" means to you that you will be able to vacation at wonderful resorts at affordable prices, this could be the case depending on how much you paid for your unit.
Many people recommend against owning a timeshare but We would advise against buying directly from the resort. There are a lot of timeshare units that people can no longer use that you can buy for a number of reasons. If somebody gets divorced or loses their job for instance, keeping current on the timeshare maintenance fees will become more challenging. Taking a trip at all might not be an option. When these types of things occur people start wondering how much is my timeshare worth? They start looking for a way to eliminate this particular thing that they can no longer use or can no longer afford.
There are many more sellers than buying. This generates opportunities to acquire timeshares at greatly reduced rates. Purchasing a unit from somebody that needs to get rid of one will give you a chance to obtain a unit at a greatly reduced price versus buying it from a resort. You might be able to get a wonderful unit at a reduction of 80% or more.
Sometimes people wind up in desperate predicaments like we stated earlier but other times individual's desires and needs change over time. For instance, for somebody that takes a family vacation each year, once the kids graduate from school and move out they may not need their timeshare any longer because they are not taking annual family trips. The reasons why someone may need to dispose of the timeshare are endless and when individuals begin looking for advice on how to sell a timeshare it won't take long for them to figure out that it won't be worth anywhere close to what they paid for it but buying a unit from somebody in this situation can help them out and can also help you save a bundle.
